VIASPACE is a clean energy company focused on providing products and technology that reduce or eliminate dependence on fossil fuels and other high-pollutant energy sources. Through its subsidiaries, the company provides raw material for cellulosic biofuels; develops and markets fuel cartridges, products and technology for methanol fuel cells; markets rechargeable lithium-ion batteries; and develops security-related monitoring and detection technology and systems for military/defense and commercial applications.

Through its renewable energy subsidiary, VIASPACE Green Energy, the company grows a fast-growing non-food grass that can be harvested four times a year. This proprietary grass is used for producing low carbon liquid biofuels such as cellulosic ethanol, methanol and green gasoline for transportation; and partially or completely replacing coal to reduce carbon emissions from electric power plants. Cellulosic biofuels made from non-food sources offer environmental and economic advantages over food crops, like corn, and are attracting strong political support around the world.

Through its alternative energy subsidiary, Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Corporation, the company designs and manufactures disposable methanol fuel cartridges that supply power for portable electronics such as notebook computers and mobile phones. Compared to traditional batteries, fuel cells cleanly and efficiently convert methanol into electricity without burning and provide longer operating time and instantaneous recharging. VIASPACE also supplies rechargeable lithium batteries for electronics, power tools, electric bicycles and other electric vehicles.

Through its high-technology subsidiary, Ionfinity, the company collaborates with Caltech and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to develop and commercialize new sensor technology that can detect very small amounts of hazardous materials such as explosives, chemical/biological weapons, toxic gases and drugs. Leveraging Ionfinity’s miniaturization technology, new portable monitoring devices and detection systems are being developed for homeland security, defense, biomedical, industrial process control, agricultural and environmental safety applications.

VIASPACE, Inc. (VSPC.OB) Subsidiary Awarded Patent for Soft Ionization Membrane

VIASPACE Inc. ( VSPC.OB), reported that its Ionfinity subsidiary has been granted a patent for a soft ionization membrane.

Ionfinity, a subsidiary in which VIASPACE holds a 46.3% membership interest, is working to develop the next-generation mass spectrometry (MS) technology, which could not only revolutionize the traditional applications of MS for industrial process control and environmental monitoring, but could also ring in a new era of detection systems for homeland security.

The technology combines two inventions made at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which should enable the system to provide a 10x increase in sensitivity, a 10x increase in mass range and the ability to miniaturize the product to make it portable and low cost.

The Ionfinity system is designed to allow high sensitivity and specificity in a portable system — a carry-on suitcase in the near-term and a shoe-box or smaller size in the future. With its projected ruggedness, low power consumption and cost, the system could be deployed in many applications, where monitoring of air, water or other substances is required.

VIASPACE, Inc. (VSPC.OB) Holds Plenty of Potential for the Future

VIASPACE’S Security division pioneers in new technologies based on inference and sensor data fusion technology. Its primary focus is on suicide bomb detection and cargo container security.

VIASPACE Security’s sensor fusion application platform intelligently uses large volumes of real-time sensor data, and can be purchased for an extremely competitive price; up until now such applications have been too expensive and difficult for the mainstream market.

VIASPACE is currently developing technology which could enable commercial instruments to detect concealed IEDs and other concealed weapons worn by suicide bombers. Homeland security and defense markets would benefit immensely from the new technology.

With the company’s motivated management and thriving divisions, it has clearly set itself apart from the rest of the industry as it shows its great potential to increase both revenue and value for shareholders.

VIASPACE, Inc. (VSPC.OB) Is Well Positioned in the Direct Methanol Fuel-Cell Market

VIASPACE is well positioned with its many technology patents from Caltech. The company is a key player in the very promising methanol fuel cell market, as they are one of the few qualified sources of methanol fuel cartridges targeting the large direct methanol fuel-cell focused OEMs.

Methanol has a higher energy density then hydrogen, and as a result it can store a greater amount of energy in a tighter space. Hydrogen cannot be fed directly into the fuel cell which consequently requires complicated catalytic reforming. Since methanol does not have this disadvantage, it is easier to manage and doesn’t demand to be stored at high pressures and low temperatures.

Investors are taking notice of methanol fuel cell technology because of the technical advantages. VIASPACE is looking strong for future growth as it continues to secure intellectual rights.

VIASPACE, Inc. (VSPC.OB) Subsidiary Files Patent Application on Tamper Resistant Fuel Cartridges

VIASPACE announced that its subsidiary, Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Corporation (DMFCC), filed a patent for tamper resistant fuel cartridges that provide fuel for small electronic devices.

Dr. Carl Kukkonen, the CEO of both VIASPACE and the subsidiary stated, “With this patent application, we are adding to our existing large intellectual property portfolio on direct methanol fuel cells and cartridges to power them. Many of our potential customers are looking at very small fuel cell applications requiring cartridges holding as little as 6 mL of fuel. This is about the size of the AA battery, but stores 17 times more energy if the fuel is methanol. Fuel cell cartridges containing methanol or other liquids used in fuel cells have to be safe to handle and resistant to unwanted access, especially by children.”

Frost & Sullivan, a market research firm, is expected to report on the latest developments in the fuel-cell markets at the upcoming Asian Fuel Cell/Battery Markets conference in Singapore. In a previous report, the research firm stated that the fuel-cell market is expected to produce 72 million unit shipments by 2010 and quadruple that number by 2013.

Current battery chemistries are struggling to meet the increased demand for more powerful and longer lasting batteries to use in portable devices. Frost & Sullivan believes that micro fuel-cell technology has a significant advantage over batteries with enormous potential to meet the rising consumer demand.

VIASPACE Inc. (VSPC.OB), Share Price Rises as Volume Continues Upward

VIASPACE Inc. (VSPC.OB), share price rose 4.48% today on increasing volume for the third straight trading day. VIASPACE is a company that transforms proven space and defense technologies from NASA and the Department of Defense into hardware and software solutions, recently announced that it continues to increase its sales base, expanding into the University market with an order from the University of Connecticut.

This can be viewed as bullish news for the company. The University of Connecticut is among some 400 to 500 universities in the United States and other countries actively engaged in fuel cell research and development, many through grants from federal, state and local governments, or in joint projects funded by major corporations. These numbers show how broad the range in the University sector is available for VIAZPACE to tap into.

The performance of hydrogen fuel cells using a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) depends on the moisture level of the membrane. The membrane only conducts protons when it is hydrated or moist. The moisture is provided by water vapor in the incoming air or hydrogen stream. The VIASENSOR HS-1000 humidity instrument will provide real-time measurements of the amount of water vapor in these gas streams.

Viaspace, Inc (VSPC.OB) to Benefit from “Methanol Fuel Cells and Cartridges on Airplanes” Proposal

Viaspace Inc (VSPC.OB), a leading technology company, discussed the benefits relating to the recent US Department of Transportation approval for Methanol Fuel Cells and Cartridge use on airplanes earlier today.

This decision would allow for any airplane passengers to be granted the ability to carry micro fuel cells and methanol fuel cell cartridges without reservation on their flight. Passengers would be able to power their notebook computers and other electronic devices for an extended period of time through the use of such devices. A strain for traveler is short electronic battery life, and this measure effectively counteracts such an unwanted facet of travel.

The proposed rules, already passed by one body of legislation, were made available in the Federal Register on September 20, 2007. This rule, once finalized, would make US transport regulations consistent with global regulations adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

The CEO of Viaspace stated “This is a major step toward commercialization of micro fuel cells, and will help the entire fuel cell industry move forward. Fuel cells are important part of global alternative energy and green energy strategies,” reports VIASPACE CEO Dr. Carl Kukkonen. “Our subsidiary company Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Corporation produces fuel cartridges for micro fuel cells. These disposable methanol fuel cartridges provide the liquid energy source which the fuel cell converts into electricity to power a notebook computer or mobile phone”

VIASPACE, Inc. (VSPC.OB) Subsidiary Reports Increasing Sales, Expanded Distribution of Framed Art

VIASPACE Inc. announced earlier today that its framed-art subsidiary Inter-Pacific Arts (IPA) signed sales contracts with four new customers. These customers included two large furniture chain-retailers on the East Coast and two high-volume furniture wholesalers that sell through catalogs and outlet stores. Shipments are anticipated to begin before this year’s holiday season.

According to the press release, the subsidiary is also in discussions with other retailers and wholesalers, including “big box” wholesale-to-the-public membership clubs.

IPA realizes that the economic downturn has affected all areas of consumer spending. However, the subsidiary’s commitment to increasing its customer base is expected to enhance sales growth in future periods as economic activity and consumer spending recover.

IPA President Sung Chang stated, “We see the current situation as an opportunity to expand our distribution network. To realize this growth opportunity, we are increasing focus on our competitive strengths — high-quality artwork, product selection, and pricing — to not only attract new customers but also retain existing customers. Our ability to fulfill high-volume orders and make timely deliveries were also key factors in signing our newest customers. Overall, we feel our commitment to customers places IPA in an excellent position for long-term growth.”

VIASPACE Chief Executive Carl Kukkonen added, “Our framed art is of the highest quality, and each customer receives a unique product in terms of the art, mattes and frames. Furthermore, we guarantee that all royalties have been paid to the artists, which are important considerations for our customers and differentiate IPA from companies that mass-produce low-end framed art, or use unauthorized prints that violate copyright law. ”
